Breast reduction operation is performed to remove excess skin, fat and tissue in the breast, to reduce and shape larger breasts and to give it a small but upright and plump appearance.
If you have large and sagging breasts that cause the following problems, you may consider breast reduction surgery.

– First of all, you should clearly explain your aesthetic concerns and expectations from this surgery. Consulting with your doctor about your expectations and wishes regarding this surgery will increase your satisfaction afterwards.
– Before the operation, breast ultrasound and mammography are performed and your breast structure is evaluated by your doctor.
– If you have regular medications, consult your doctor.
– If you smoke, you must quit at least 10 days before surgery. Because smoking makes it difficult to heal postoperative tissues and stitch scars.
– If you are taking medications such as blood thinners and aspirin, consult your doctor. You will be asked not to use these medications for a while.
Breast reduction surgery is an operation performed under general anesthesia and takes approximately 2.5 – 3.5 hours. You need to stay in the hospital for 1 night after the operation.
There are 3 most commonly used incision sites and techniques:
-From the Nipple Circumference (Periareolar):
It is preferred if the amount of growth and sagging in the breast is low.
– Vertical Scar:
It is made with a vertical incision around the nipple and extending to the breast fold. It is preferred if the amount of sagging in the breast is medium.
– Inverted T:
It is preferred if your breasts are very large and there is severe sagging, it is easier to give the desired shape to the breast in this method.
After the incisions are made;
– Excess skin, fat and breast tissue are removed.
-Breast tissue is reduced and shaped.
-If there is a need, the nipple is reduced and brought to the required height.
-The excess in the skin is removed to compensate for the loss of elasticity.
– After the breast is given the desired shape, the incisions are closed.
How is the Appropriate Method Decided in Breast Reduction Surgery?
Different techniques and incisions can be used in breast reduction surgery.
The following should be evaluated with the surgeon:
– Breast tissue (size and shape)
– Size and location of the nipple
– The amount of sagging in the breast
– Skin texture, thickness and elasticity
– Post-operative 5-7 days rest is recommended. Then, by consulting your doctor, you can go to work and continue your normal life as long as the working conditions are not severe.
– A special bra will be worn for you after the operation. The type of bra that you should prefer for a certain period is sports bras. You can start wearing normal bras after about 2 months.
– It is important to keep your breast clean and dry after the surgery.
– You should use the medications given by your doctor regularly and apply your dressing as the doctor will be shown to you after the operation.
– Especially in the first week, you should avoid strenuous movements and heavy lifting.
– You should not smoke as it affects wound healing negatively.
– You should not sleep face down for two months and you should not be hit to your chest.
– You can take a shower after the 4th day, swim after the 2nd month, and do sports after the 3rd month.
Postoperative Recovery Period
Breast reduction is a surgical operation performed with an incision. In the early postoperative period, there may be swelling and bruising in the breast. These are temporary and disappear in 2-5 weeks. However, it takes 6 months to 1 year for the breast to take its final form. Use the medication prescribed by your doctor. After a while, the scars will turn pink and begin to melt and disappear. However, there is a possibility of a slight scar in breast lift surgeries. After the operation, there may be sensation changes in the breast, do not worry, this is a temporary period, your feelings will return to normal after recovery.
