Excess skin may occur in the abdominal area, due to excessive weight gain or weight loss, pregnancy, previous surgeries, genetic or hormonal disorders. In addition, there may be cracks, sagging and wrinkles that you cannot find a solution with sports and diet.
Tummy tuck operation is to remove those deformations in the abdominal region by removing excess fat and skin tissue, also known as abdominoplasty. A tummy tuck is an operation for shaping the abdominal area.
How is a Tummy Tuck Done?
The purpose of tummy tuck surgery is to tighten the muscles in the abdomen and remove excess fat and skin tissue.
-It is done by removing the subcutaneous fatty tissue of the area between the belly button and the beginning of the genital area. In this way, most of the cracks are removed.
-If necessary, the location of the sagging belly button can be changed.
-It is usually combined with liposuction so that the waist area is also shaped.
There are two most preferred types of tummy tuck surgery:
-Total Tummy Tuck
This operation is done through an incision in the middle of your two hip bones along the laundry scar. If you have had a cesarean delivery before, the same incision line is used.
After the abdominal muscles are tightened and excess fat is removed, the skin is stretched down and the excess area is removed. The belly button is repositioned. The incisions are closed with stitches.
-Mini Tummy Tuck
If there is a slight sagging in the lower abdomen, if there is no wrinkle or crack, it is the process of correcting that area with an incision of approximately 5-10 cm. Generally, the location of the belly button is not changed in this process.
– If you have a stable weight
– If your weight loss is completed after bariatric surgery (eg sleeve gastrectomy)
– If you do not have a metabolic disease
– If you are not planning a pregnancy in the near term (consult your doctor)
– If your abdomen is sagging, cracked, deformed for various reasons
– In general, if you are not satisfied with the appearance of your abdomen
Then, you are a good candidate for this operation.
Who is NOT a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
Tummy tuck is not a weight loss surgery. If you have more than 15% of your ideal weight, this alone may not be the right surgery for you.
– First of all, you should clearly explain your aesthetic concerns and expectations from this surgery. Consulting with your doctor about your expectations and wishes regarding this surgery will increase your satisfaction afterwards.
– If you have regular medications, consult your doctor.
– If you smoke, you must quit at least 10 days before surgery. Because smoking makes it difficult to heal postoperative tissues and stitch scars.
– If you are taking medications such as blood thinners and aspirin, consult your doctor. You will be asked not to use these medications for a while.
Tummy tuck surgery is an operation performed under general anesthesia and takes about 1-2 hours. You need to stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights after the operation.
– Post-operative 5-7 days rest is recommended. Afterwards, you can consult your doctor and go to work and continue your normal life as long as the working conditions are not severe.
– A special compression garment will be worn for you after the operation. This garment is to minimize edema.
– It is important to keep your area clean and dry after the surgery.
– You should use the medications given by your doctor regularly and apply your dressing as in the training given to you after surgery.
– In the first week, you should avoid forceful movements and heavy lifting.
– You should not smoke as it affects wound healing negatively.
Postoperative Recovery Period
Tummy tuck is a surgical operation performed with an incision. You may need to use antibiotics after the operation. Use the medication prescribed by your doctor. Your stitches will not be removed, they will melt on their own.
